We have worked with Evans Mwangi for many years. He was our guide on a trek to Mount Kenya in 1999. He told us that work was sporadic and his ambition was to set up his own guiding company. Well, with a little coaching, he did.
Evans now employs 38 guides and porters for treks to Mount Kenya, Kilimanjaro and Rwenzori in Uganda, the top three mountains in Africa. To put the impact of his business into context his team has over 120 dependents in villages around the mountain. You don't get that pressure in Europe as an entrepreneur!
When Kenya was in turmoil last year nearly every expedition was cancelled overnight. But being the person he is, he immediately promoted mountain treks in Tanzania and Uganda, hired local guides and moved his Kenyan team to support them. Both countries now contribute to a broader portfolio. He has also extended the trekking experience so his clients can have guided camping expeditions in game parks. It's just a fantastic way to spend a few weeks!
